WESTERN GENERAL HOSPITAL OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY SERVICES
Ms Susie Wallis, British Toy and Hobby Association, 80 Camberwell Road, LONDON SE5 0EG
Dear Ms Wallis,
Re: R.N.I.B. CATALOGUE
Having found KikaFlik in a local toy shop, I immediately recognised the many and varied possibilities for its use within the Occupational Therapy Department at the above hospital. The children attending for therapy have a wide range of diagnoses including Developmental Co-ordination Disorder (Clumsy Child) Developmental delay, Cerebral Palsy, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Visual Perceptual Difficulties.
Although KikaFlik has been trailed with a normal population, I have been able to use it with many children who have motor/perceptual difficulties. The children have all responded favourably to the toy. Despite the fact that some of them have been unable to catch the ball, it has proved valuable in encouraging visual tracking as well as-
1. eye/hand/foot co-ordination
2. ball skills
3. imagination
4. social skills
Many of the children do not like playing ball games with their peers. Having practiced on their own, in a non-threatening environment, many of the parents are reporting that their child is then able to join in successfully with their peers.
I have discussed several ideas with Elspeth Robertson with regard to balls and bean bags suitable for use and feel that it would be an extremely useful toy/piece of enabling equipment to use with visually impaired children.
KikaFlik has endless possibilities and its only limitation is the therapists/child's imagination!
As a Pediatric Occupational Therapist with fifteen years of experience, I am always looking for toys that are suitable for my clients which are fun, rewarding and which stretch the child both physically and imaginatively. KikaFlik does just this. Following a trial in the department, many of the children's parents have purchased one for use at home. It is also being well received by my fellow colleagues.
Yours sincerely
